Rising on Our Own: Beyond Aid and Beyond Blame is the 2026 second edition of Nakel Nikiema’s history of African capacity and the argument that follows from it. The book refuses two worn stories: that Africa’s troubles are only someone else’s crime, and that more aid will complete the work. It starts earlier than the partition and it ends later than independence day.The first movement is precolonial. Ghana, Mali, the Kingdom of Kongo, Kemet, the Swahili Coast, and the political thought that ran through them are treated as evidence of states, markets, and learning-not as decoration. The second movement is conquest: the Berlin Conference, racial science used as law, direct and indirect rule, and the extractive economies built on that law, including the Congo Free State. The third movement is the present. Reform after independence, the record of foreign aid and intervention, globalization, indigenous knowledge, regional bodies from ECOWAS to the African Union, the diaspora, and the problem of self-reliance without isolation.A short note at the front tells the reader how to read the book. Historical and statistical claims are marked as such. Interpretation is marked as such. Chapter 12, on a United Sovereign States of Africa, is a normative framework for fairness, fair trade, and equal partnership-not a prediction and not a government program. This edition updates institutional and development context through 2026. It is written for general readers, students, and anyone who wants African agency without romance and African responsibility without excuse.
