La battaglia di Karuse, come la più famosa sconfitta subita dai cavalieri teutonici sul lago Peipus nel 1242, contro i russi, fu l’altra importante sconfitta dei cavalieri teutonici subita sopra i ghiacci, questa volta del mar Baltico e contro i lituani.L’ambiente di quei luoghi, particolarmente inospitale e tenebrosi per gli stranieri che si accingevano alla conquista di quelle terre. Lo scontro di Karuse avvenne in un periodo in cui la presenza dell’ordine teutonico nel Baltico era messa in discussione dalla rivolta delle locali popolazioni pagane che vinsero numerose e importanti battaglie contro i Teutoni.Solo l’arrivo costante di crociati europei e il possesso di importanti fortezze permetterà, ai teutonici, nel riuscire a mantenere le proprie posizioni e contribuire alla conversione al cristianesimo dei pagani dopo decenni di lotte. La scarsità di fonti di quegli eventi limitano le conoscenze degli storici; principalmente si tratta della Cronaca Rimata della Livonia, documento compilato in ambiente teutonico intorno alla fine del XIII secolo, mostrando comunque una narrazione di parte nel raccontare le operazioni militari dei crociati.
