I Popoli del Mare furono una nutrita confederazione i navigatori guerrieri che, nel XII secolo a.C., destabilizzarono l’antico Egitto e il Vicino Oriente. Chi erano e cosa fecero questi uomini dall’origine misteriosa. Provenivano probabilmente in gran parte dall’ Egeo, dall’Asia Minore e dalle isole mediterranee. Collassarono di fatto l’Età del Bronzo. Il loro arrivo coincise con la caduta di grandi imperi, come quello Ittita. A questi subentrarono nell’attacco all’Egitto. Vennero respinti a fatica dai faraoni Merenptah e Ramsete III. Le fonti egizie li citano con nomi come Peleset, Sherden e Shekelesh. Lukka, Denyen e altri. Eredità culturale: alcuni di loro, i Peleset, si stanziarono in Canaan, diventando i famosi Filistei biblici.
