A glance at Franz Liszt’s catalogue of works reveals the significance of arrangements and transcriptions in his compositional output. But what exactly are the differences in piano technique and musical interpretation between the originals and the transcriptions? What was Franz Liszt’s relationship with the composers of the original works? This thesis aims to shed light on the genesis and various aspects of these works and, through musicological analyses of selected songs by F. Schubert, R. Schumann and F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy, as well as pianistic studies, to highlight the significance of the transcriptions.
