Desde mediados de la década de 1990, Roberto Merino empezó a escribir crónicas y artículos sobre Santiago, sus rasgos particulares, historias, personajes, barrios y calles, que parten de la observación directa y llegan a los datos más recónditos. Tuvo tanto éxito que los textos pronto se recopilaron en libros y lo transformaron, un poco a su pesar, en experto “santiagólogo”, a quien los periodistas recurrían, y recurren, cuando la ciudad se vuelve tema de análisis y discusión. La gran compilación de estas crónicas, el clásico Todo Santiago, apareció en 2012 (Premio Municipal de Santiago), una selección del editor Andrés Braithwaite que este libro recoge casi íntegra. Pero Merino siguió escribiendo periódicamente sobre temas urbanos durante diez años más, actividad que esta antología suma y que da cuenta del curso existencial y del embrollo psíquico y emocional de una vida entera en la ciudad. 10
