The Island of Black Waters (Kala Pani) is the autobiographical account of Hadrat Maulana Muhammad Jafar Thanseri Sahib, recording his arrest in the 1860s, prosecution by the British colonial authorities, sentence of death, commutation to transportation for life, and long years of confinement in the Andaman Islands.Written after his return, the narrative follows the author from the search of his home and attempted flight through arrest, interrogation, trial, imprisonment at Ambala and Lahore, transportation through Karachi and Bombay, and finally his arrival at Port Blair. It records prison conditions, hard labour, colonial judicial proceedings, relations among prisoners and officials, family separation, marriage and domestic life in Andaman, and the circumstances surrounding his eventual release.Throughout the memoir, Thanseri interprets his experiences through Qur’anic teaching, prayer, patience, divine decree, repentance, and trust in Allah. The work consequently functions not only as a record of nineteenth-century imprisonment, but also as a religious autobiography in which political prosecution, personal suffering, and changing circumstances are understood through the author’s Islamic moral and spiritual worldview. The volume additionally preserves observations concerning Andaman society, penal administration, prisoner regulations, education, language, religious practice, intercommunal relations, and the author’s encounters with colonial institutions.Of particular historical interest are the accounts of the author’s trial and sentence, the transportation system associated with 'Kala Pani,' the treatment of prisoners, the assassination of Lord Mayo as narrated in the text, and the author’s recollections of figures imprisoned alongside him.Suitable for scholars and students of South Asian Muslim history, British Indian penal history, Islamic autobiography, colonial legal history, and nineteenth-century religious movements, as well as libraries building collections in Islamic and South Asian historical studies. This edition preserves a first-person Muslim account of imprisonment and religious life under colonial rule, presented according to the author’s own historical recollection and theological interpretation.
