Esse texto se propõe a elucidar as raízes psíquicas e sociais do ódio. O racismo é a instituição da significaçãoraça , cuja principal característica é o ódio do outro pela sua raça, pela cor de sua pele. Faremos uma abordagem do racismo sob a perspectiva social-histórica, portanto, considerando o processo de socialização dos indivíduos e também a nossa herança cultural. Não poderíamos deixar de considerar a relação entre raça e escravidão e entre racismo e colonização, imperialismo e totalitarismo. Na sociedade capitalista, o racismo deve ser visto a partir de duas significações imaginarias opostas, que são a ideia de expansão ilimitada do domínio racional (controle da natureza, inclusive da natureza humana) e a ideia de autonomia social e individual (liberdade, igualdade, democracia e justiça).
